As a final example consider the representation theory of finite groups, which is one of the most fascinating chapters of representation theory. In this theory, one considers representations of the group algebra A= C[G] of a finite group G– the algebra with basis ag,g∈ Gand multiplication theory, number theory, harmonic analysis) and its applications. Applications include mathematical physics, crystallography and probability theory. 1.3 Combinatorial motivation The main purpose of these Notes is to give a self-contained account of the representation theory that is needed to prove the rooted map version of the Representation Theory CT, Lent 2005 1 What is Representation Theory? Groups arise in nature as “sets of symmetries (of an object), which are closed under compo-sition and under taking inverses”.

For a range of problems for which derivational solutions have remained unsatisfying Williams proposes simple one-step explanations in terms of mismatches between his levels of representation. Math 210B. Why study representation theory? 1. Motivation Books and courses on group theory often introduce groups as purely abstract algebraic objects, but in practice groups Gtend to arise through their actions on other things: a manifold, a molecule, solutions to a di erential equation, solutions to a polynomial equation, and so on.

Group Representation Theory for Physicists by Jin-Quan Chen is the best I have read and he explains things with a minimum of requiring external references. In other words fairly self- contained and understandable but still is able to explain Young diagrams, root spaces,Cartan-Weyl basis, Dynkin diagrams etc. with concrete examples.
